You did everything right. You went to class, built your portfolio, completed internships, stayed involved, and now you have the degree to show for it.

It’s graduation season, and while social media might make it seem like everyone is stepping into their dream role, the reality is very different, especially in public relations. The industry is more competitive than ever, and the job market is not exactly working in your favor. Landing a full time role right after college is still possible, but it is no longer the expectation.

Despite what TV and film often show us, most graduates are not walking straight into their ideal roles. Real life looks different, and that is something more people need to be honest about.

If you are entering the PR world and trying to figure out your next move, this is your reality check and your guide.

Do Your Research and Then Go Further

Before graduation, start creating a list of companies you are genuinely interested in. Go beyond surface level research. Look into team culture, entry level salaries, turnover rates, and what success looks like within the first few months.

Use LinkedIn as a tool, not just a profile. Search for people who currently work or have worked at those companies and reach out. Express your interest and ask about their experience. These conversations can give you insight that you will not find on a website and can help you make more informed decisions.

Study the PR Landscape Consistently

Understanding PR goes beyond what you learn in class. Make it a habit to read and stay informed.

Follow publications within industries you are interested in, whether that is sports, media, hospitality, healthcare, or entertainment. Stay updated with platforms like PR Daily, PR Week, and PR Newswire. Pay attention to press releases, campaigns, and how brands communicate with their audiences.

This will not only make you more knowledgeable, but it will also prepare you for interviews. When asked how you stay up to date, you will already have an answer rooted in real habits.

Show Up Confidently Even When It Feels Uncertain

Life after graduation can be intimidating, especially if you do not have a job lined up. It is easy to feel discouraged or question your direction.

Not having a job right away does not define your worth.

There may be moments where things do not go as planned. That experience is real. After graduating, I struggled with not immediately securing a job, and it took a toll on me mentally. Eventually, I had to shift my mindset and see it as redirection instead of rejection.

I continued to create, continued to learn, and stayed connected to the industry. I attended networking events, volunteered, and kept putting myself in spaces where opportunities could find me.

Even when it feels difficult, continue to show up.

Be Open Minded but Use Discernment

Being open to opportunities is important, but do not let urgency lead you into the wrong situations.

Not every opportunity is worth your time. Take the time to evaluate roles carefully. Make sure they are legitimate and aligned with your goals. Ask yourself what you are gaining from the experience.

Opportunities should be mutual. It should not only be about what you can do for a company, but also about what the company can do for your growth. Using discernment will help you avoid being taken advantage of and ensure that your time is being used intentionally.

Have Backup Plans and Then Have More

In PR, knowing how to pivot is essential, and that applies to life as well.

Things may not go according to your original plan, and that is okay. Having multiple backup plans is not a sign of failure, it is a sign of adaptability.

When I realized I would not have a job lined up after graduation, I made the decision to move back home and go to graduate school. It was not my first or second plan, but it became a step that still supported my long term goals.

Your journey may not look how you imagined, but that does not mean you are off track.
